Engage SF Literacy is a member of the Engage San Francisco university-community initiative which seeks to achieve community-identified outcomes for children, youth and families in the Western Addition neighborhood of San Francisco.
ESF tutors provide both in-school and after school support to children, assisting with both academic and recreational activities in San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) elementary schools and local community organizations.
Their primary role is to boost children's reading and literacy skills, but they also provide general assistance to classroom teachers and after school program staff as needed.
Specific responsibilities vary by placement site and may include:
reading with children or playing literacy games, helping children complete homework, and engaging with children during playtime, athletics, or other enrichment activities.
ESF tutors with expertise in athletics, visual and performing arts, STEM fields, or other skills may have the opportunity to take a more active role in leading or supporting after school enrichment activities.
ESF Tutors receive start-up training over two consecutive semesters through 1-credit courses housed in USF's School of Education, as well as ongoing support from McCarthy Center staff and supervisors at their placement sites.

No Responsibilities Provide in-school and/or after school support to help boost children's reading skills and literacy development and foster their love of reading Provide general assistance to daytime/classroom teachers and/or after school program staff In-school support - support students during independent and small-group work time and assist with classroom management transitions between lessons and to/from lunch etc.
After school support - engage with children during snacks/meals, homework, enrichment activities, and playtime As skills and experience allow, take an active role in leading or supporting after school enrichment activities (ie:
athletics, visual and performing arts, STEM, etc.
) Some independent professional development work Requirements Availability to complete up to two 1-credit training courses taught by USF faculty/staff during first year in the program Course meets weekly for one hour on Thursdays, 5:
